a) Photographic Category- this photograph comes under the photographical genre of Fashion.

b) Purpose- the purpose of this photograph is mainly to advertise the photographer himself and his capabilities, also his style of photography. Also I feel as if the photo itself advertises beauty standards and a woman's role to society. This photograph would have been seen on a fashion and beauty website, I found it on the James Nader website advertising his work.

c+d) Image Analysis and Meaning- A denotation of the foreground is the subject of the photograph with her hands on her head facing the camera. A denotation of the background is a blurred blue background which keeps the model in focus. This photograph has uses the rule of thirds to compose the image, for example in the top third it shows off her eyes, the middle third shows off her mouth and the final third shows off the clothing and her chest, she is also at the focal point so the placement of the subject is balanced. The photograph also uses high key lighting to define the face of the model and what the photo contains including the use of make up.  However this lighting is artificial 3 point lighting as the photograph has been taken in a studio. The reason for the high key lighting for definition of the model could connote that women are seen as sexual objects and the only thing that matters about a woman is the way she looks. As the tape covers her mouth it could signalise that people are not interested in her mind and what she has to say, they are more bothered about her appearance. The photograph uses shallow depth of field, the aperture size for this image would have been f-5.6 and this is able to connote that the main focus of the photo is the model. This photograph would have used a fast shutter speed (1/125 of a second) to capture the moment just in case the model blinked for example. This photograph would have also used a low ISO which would have been 100 as there is high key lighting. The orientation of this image is portrait, this is able to show off more of the models body without having a lot of background, which makes sure that she is the focus.

Sports Photographer- Mark Pain

Biography for Mark Pain- Mark Pain has covered many world renowned sports events including the 2012 Olympics, and in 2011 was named Sports Photographer of the year. Main Pain also his own Sports Photography school and is Chief Sports Photographer for the Mail On Sunday.

Reference: PAIN.M 'Ryder Cup' (2012) available at: http://www.markpain.com/index.html  [19/03/15]

a) Photographic Category- this photograph comes under the photographical genre of Sports.

b) Purpose- the purpose of this image was to capture the moment of when Ian Poulter putted the golf ball which contributed to Europe's Ryder Cup win in 2012. This would have been seen in news articles and golf magazines as it would go with the sports story on the Ryder Cup and advertises it.

c) Image Analysis- A denotation of the foreground is the crowd and the subject cheering due to his success at golf, a denotation of the background is that it is the blurry green so that the player is the only thing the audience focus on. This photograph uses the rule of thirds to compose the image, the top third is able to show his face and the emotion, the second third shows his shirt and what team he is playing for and the final third shows his putter. The subject is also at the focal point of the image. This photograph uses natural high key lighting due to the fact that the match was played in the daytime, also it shows off the bright colours of them team which makes him stand out. For focus this photograph use deep depth of field, this is because you could say that the golfer is in the background due to the fact that the people in front are out of focus, however it puts the main focus on the golfer and blurs out anything else as he is the only relevant part of the picture. The shutter speed used for this photograph would have been quite fast (1/125th of a second), this is because the golfer was moving and to get the shot to make sure that the player is clear it would have had to have been a fast shutter, also due to the fact that it is very bright and if it would have been any slower the image would have been white. The aperture size would have been around f-16 due to the fact there is a lot of light and there is deep depth of field. The ISO number would have been around 100 due to the high key lighting. The photographer uses the crowd as the frame so that the subject is the only thing to focus on and to isolate him. The image is landscape so that the player takes up the image.

d) This photograph is able to connote to the audience the players passion for the sport, as he is cheering it is quite an emotive photograph as it shows his triumph and the fact that e is facing the fans proves that he wants to share this winning moment with them. Also the fact that he is the only thing in focus it shows his importance to the shot, and also connotes that this is his moment and winning putt.

Landscape Photographer- Adam Burton

Biography for Adam Burton- Adam Burton is a photographer which specialises in Landscape photography especially in the Southwest of England. Adam is also one of the the UK's leading landscape photography and in 2008 made landscape photography his full time profession.

Reference: BURTON.A 'The Dark Side'  available at: http://www.adamburtonphotography.com  [19/03/15]

a) Photographic Category- this photograph comes under the photographical genre of Landscape.

b) Purpose- the purpose of this landscape image is to show the beauty of the scenery and to also advertise Adam Burton as a photographer. This photograph could have been seen on trip websites advertising a certain place for people to visit.

c) Image analysis- for composition this photo uses the rule of thirds to compose the image, the first third shows the sky and the cliff, the second third shows the beach and sea, and the final third shows the rock steps. The moon is also at a focal point on the image. This image also uses natural lighting, this is able to capture the mood of the setting and what it is trying to convey. For focus this photograph uses deep depth of field to make sure that the viewer can focus on every aspect of this scenery. They would have used a slow shutter speed to capture the waves moving together in this photograph. Also as it was night they would have used a shutter speed such as 1/30th of a second to have a longer exposure to light. The aperture size would have been f-11 to have a larger exposure to light. The ISO would have been higher than 400 because there is a lot of low key lighting. This photograph also uses leading lines towards the moon as it could be the main focus for the image. This photograph is also landscape so it can capture more of the scenery.

d) Meaning- This photograph is able to connote peace and tranquility. This is because of the calm waves and cool blue colours which set a natural and chilled out tone. It also makes the photo quite mysterious and isolated, due to the full moon and the fact that nobody is around.

Portrait Photographer- Annie Leibovitz

Biography for Annie Leibovitz- Annie Leibovitz was born October 2, 1949, in Waterbury, Connecticut. In 1970 she took a job at Rolling Stone magazine and in 1983 started working for Vanity Fair.

Reference: LEIBOVITZ.A 'Meryl Streep' (1981) available at: http://sites.lafayette.edu/art206-sp14/files/2014/04/ARTSTOR_103_41822001282878-300x300.jpg [19/03/15]

a) Photographical category- this photograph comes under the photographical category of portrait.

b) Purpose- the purpose of this portrait image was to be on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine as they were doing an article about Meryl Streep.

c) Image analysis- this photograph uses high key lighting (artificial) to illuminate Meryl Streep's face and bring out her features, also to show the makeup and emphasise it. This photograph also uses shallow depth of field, this is to make sure that she is the main focus on the photograph and nothing else can take your attention away. This photograph also uses the rule of thirds for composition, the top third is her hair, the second third is her face and hands and the last third is her chest. So her face is at the focal point of the image. This photograph fits its purpose as it follows the general conventions of Rolling Stones' covers which are medium close ups of celeb's faces. Due to the high key lighting this photograph would have also used a fast shutter speed (1/125th of a second) as there is a lot of exposure to light and if it was any slower the photograph would have contained a lot of white which means it is overexposed. The aperture size would have been around f-5.6 due to the high exposure to light. The ISO would have been around 100 as the sensor would have been sensitive to light as it is high key.

d) Meaning- For me this photograph conveys many meanings. The white connotes the exaggeration of make up and how different a person could look with it on. One of the meanings he photo is meant to convey is the manipulation of women, that s why she is pulling her face and has a lot of exaggerate make up on. The pulling of the face may also connote plastic surgery and the lengths women go to to be able look 'perfect'.
